On Nov. 3, come to The Madison in downtown Detroit for a special screening of Poverty, Inc. followed by a filmmaker Q&A with director Michael Matheson Miller and Senegalese entrepreneur Magatte Wade.
Since its release, Poverty, Inc. has won more than 50 international awards and has been screened in over 60 countries. Its message on the unintended consequences of foreign aid and the importance of local entrepreneurship remains highly relevant to today’s policy debates.
After the film and Q&A, attendees will also get a sneak peek of an upcoming Acton-produced documentary on social and material poverty in the United States.
About the film
“I see multiple colonial governors,” says Ghanaian software entrepreneur Herman Chinery-Hesse of the international development establishment. “We are held captive by the donor community.”
The West has made itself the protagonist of development, giving rise to a multibillion dollar poverty industry.
From TOMs Shoes to international adoptions, from solar panels to U.S. food aid, the film challenges each of us to ask the tough question: Could I be part of the problem?
